Bentley OpenComms Designer Help

Long Transaction Persistence with Expert Designer for Comms

The OpenComms WorkFlow Manager interface allows an organization to define workflows for specific job types within the organization and user privileges within each workflow for adherence to processes such as design approvals, cost estimates, as-built approvals, etc. By default, a linear workflow is delivered with WorkFlow Manager but nonlinear work flows are also supported with this interface.

WorkRequest Creation in WorkFlow Manager

  1. Double click the WorkFlowManager shortcut on the desktop or create a shortcut from the WorkFlowManager.exe file located in the root directory of OpenCommsDesigner:

  2. In the WorkFlowManager interface, select Home tab at the top and highlight the FolderList tab in the lower left. Highlight My Work in the Folder List pane and any existing WorkRequests should display:

  3. Click on the 'New' icon dropdown arrow in the upper left corner to create a new Work Request. Enter a name in the upper right corner and click OK:

  4. After the workrequest is created, select it in the My Work pane, right click and navigate to Actions > Create Design.

  5. Select Create Design to initiate the creation of a new DGN file from the OpenComms project seed and also a long transaction version in Oracle for this workrequest.
  6. Once the version and DGN file have been created, select the workrequest in the My Work pane and right click to launch OpenComms.

  • With the Create Design action, a version and DGN are created of the same name as the workrequest. When OpenComms is launched, it is automatically launched into the new DGN and pessimistic version for this workrequest.
  • After opening the new workrequest, the user needs to choose which features will be extracted from the Interoperability dialog, query the area where the work is to take place and lock the features for editing to begin working.
  • The Design workflow in WorkFlowManager for OpenComms delivers an “out of the box” design workflow which can be used or modified by an organization. WorkFlowManager for OpenComms creates the design session workspace, manages the different states of that workflow and handles the final post of a workrequest to the “LIVE” or “as-built” database in an OpenComms project. Users are assigned different procedures and privileges within a workflow and email notifications can be sent upon state changes of a project in WorkFlowManager.
  • The following chart lists the actions and descriptions of each delivered with OpenComms WorkFlowManager:

Using the Expert Designer for Comms design workflow, users should not use the Merge to Parent option from inside of a Comms session to post changes to the “LIVE” database. Users should only post changes to the workspace when changes are made in a Comms session as the Expert Designer for Comms interface is built to handle the final post of a project in order to adhere to a workflow, audit that workflow and finally remove that version from the Oracle Comms user. If an organization requires modification to the delivered workflow, they should first contact a Bentley technical representative for assistance.
